Serengeti
National Park
This is
the most visited park in Tanzania, and many people will
recognize the name Serengeti from numerous nature films shown on TV.
The park covers 5700 square miles of savannah grassland, and
continues into Kenya where it is known as Maasai Mara. More than 3
million wild animals live here in one of the oldest ecosystems in
the world. The essential features of climate, vegetation and fauna
have changed little in the past million years. Serengeti, meaning
endless plains in the Maasai language, is considered to be the jewel
in the crown of Tanzania's national parks.

Ngorongoro
Conservation Area
This park is a
magnificent site containing active volcanoes, archaeological sites,
bush land, sandy plains, Ngorongoro Crater and Olduvai Gorge. The
crater is a major tourist attraction in the country and was shaped
millions of years ago, when a huge volcanic mountain collapsed
inwards and created the world’s largest calderas. The crater is 610
meters deep and covers an area of 260 square kilometres. The
crater’s floor hosts a great variety of wild life.

Olduvai
Gorge
is situated
within Ngorongoro, a steep sided ravine about 50 km long and 91m
deep. In the slopes of this crater Dr. Louis Leakey and Mary Leakey
discovered stone tools, building sites and bones of early hominids.
In 1959 the famous Zinjanthropus cranium was found, which proved
that the first human appeared here some two million years ago.
Olduvai Gorge is often visited by archaeologists, anthropologists
and students. Bird watchers and nature lovers also find the site
rewarding.
